Privacy Policy

Who we are

MJ Tech Institute (ABN 24 613 109 221) ("MJ Tech Institute", "we", "us", "our") operates the website at mjtechinstitute.com and the learning platform reached through it (together, the "Service"). We are based in Australia and this policy is written to comply with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles ("APPs"). Where our users are located in the European Economic Area, the UK or California, we also describe the additional rights available to you below.

This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect through the Service, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the choices and rights you have over it. It applies to the marketing site, your student account, the lesson player, and any communications we send you.

Information we collect

We collect the following categories of information:

• Account information — your full name, email address and password (stored securely by our authentication provider, Supabase, and never in plain text) when you register.
• Learning data — the paths and lessons you enrol in, your progress through each chapter, quiz and project submissions, completion status, and certificates earned. This is what lets you pick up exactly where you left off.
• Payment information — if you subscribe to a paid plan, our payment processor Stripe collects your card details directly. We never see or store your full card number; we only receive a record that a payment succeeded, the plan you purchased, and billing metadata (e.g. invoice history, renewal date).
• Communications — messages you send us for support, booking enquiries, or feedback, including the content of those messages and your contact details.
• Log and device data — IP address, browser type and version, operating system, pages visited, time spent on lessons, and referring URLs, collected automatically when you use the Service.
• Cookies and analytics data — collected via cookies and Google Analytics as described in our Cookie Policy.

How we use your information

We use personal information to:

• create and administer your account, and let you resume lessons across devices;
• process payments, manage subscriptions, and send receipts and billing notices;
• issue certificates of completion and verify your progress on a path;
• respond to support requests and booking enquiries;
• send transactional emails (confirmations, password resets, receipts) and, where you have not opted out, occasional product updates or new-path announcements;
• monitor, secure and improve the Service, including diagnosing technical issues and understanding which lessons are working well;
• comply with our legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Use.

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your lesson content, code submissions or account data to train third-party advertising profiles.

AI-assisted learning features

Several parts of the Service are AI-guided — for example, lesson narration, review checklists and the "AI pair" workflow that our curriculum teaches you to direct. Where you choose to use a connected AI tool (such as Claude Code) as part of a lesson, any prompts or code you share with that tool are subject to that tool provider's own privacy terms, not ours — we recommend you avoid pasting personal information into any AI tool while completing lessons. MJ Tech Institute does not use your private code submissions to train our own or any third-party AI model.

Children's and minors' privacy

The Junior Web AI Engineer path and our other quests are designed to be accessible to motivated first-time coders aged 10 and up, alongside adult learners. Because of this, we take extra care with information collected from younger students.

• If you are under 18, you may only create an account and use the Service with the knowledge and permission of a parent or legal guardian, who remains responsible for the account and any purchases made on it.
• We do not knowingly collect more personal information from a child than is necessary to provide an account and track lesson progress (name, email, and progress data only).
• If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information without your consent, or you would like to review, update or delete that information, contact us at support@mjtechinstitute.com and we will act promptly.

Who we share information with

We do not sell personal information. We share it only with the service providers who help us run the Service, each bound to use it only for the purpose we engage them for:

• Supabase — authentication, database hosting and file storage for your account and learning data.
• Stripe — payment processing and subscription billing.
• Google Analytics — aggregated usage analytics, as described in our Cookie Policy.
• Email delivery providers used to send transactional and, where opted in, marketing email.

We may also disclose personal information where required by law, to protect the rights, property or safety of MJ Tech Institute or our users, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of business assets — in which case we will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

Cross-border data storage

Our service providers host infrastructure in multiple countries, which means your personal information may be processed or stored outside Australia, including in the United States. Where this occurs, we take reasonable steps to ensure those overseas recipients handle your information consistently with the Australian Privacy Principles, including relying on the provider's own contractual and security commitments.

Data retention

We retain your account and learning data for as long as your account is active, so your progress, certificates and repos remain available to you. If you close your account, we retain a minimal record (such as billing history) for as long as required to meet our legal, accounting and tax obligations, after which it is deleted or de-identified.

Security

We use industry-standard safeguards — including encryption in transit, hashed passwords, and access controls on our database — to protect your personal information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work to keep these protections current.

Your rights

Under the Australian Privacy Principles, you may request access to the personal information we hold about you and ask us to correct it if it is inaccurate. To make a request, email support@mjtechinstitute.com — we will respond within a reasonable time.

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the UK, you additionally have rights under the GDPR to receive a copy of your data, request erasure or restriction of processing, object to processing (including for marketing), and request data portability. If you are a California resident, the CCPA gives you similar rights to know, delete and opt out of the sale of personal information — noting that we do not sell personal information. You can exercise any of these rights by contacting us at the email address above.

You can opt out of marketing emails at any time using the unsubscribe link in any message we send. You cannot opt out of transactional emails about your account or purchases while your account remains active.

Do Not Track

Our Service does not currently respond to "Do Not Track" browser signals. You can control cookie-based tracking directly through your browser settings — see our Cookie Policy for details.

Links to other sites

The Service links to third-party sites — for example GitHub, Stripe's checkout pages, or resources referenced inside lessons. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of those sites, and we encourage you to review their policies before providing any personal information.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes to our practices or for legal reasons. We will post the revised policy on this page and update the effective date above; if a change is material, we will also notify you by email or through a notice on the Service.
